Updated: Gov Signs State Budget, Vetoes $2M

Gov. Susana Martinez signed into law today a $5.6 billion budget for the upcoming year that will increase state spending for the first time in four years.

Martinez used her line-item veto authority to delete about $2 million in proposed spending from the budget bill.

She signed the legislation at a Rio Rancho elementary school, where she was reading a Dr. Seuss book to kindergarten students.

The budget, which takes effect July 1, will increase state spending by about $219 million — or 4 percent — from this year’s levels.
