Michael Cohen of the Pacific Institute, who’s done a lot of work on municipal water consumption and conservation in the western United States, had an interesting followup comment in an email after my story in this morning’s paper on Albuquerque’s water conservation success:
One of the key stories to emerge in ABQ, Denver, San Diego, Vegas, and other locations is that residents’ conservation efforts have greatly exceeded water agency expectations and targets. Once people realize that water is a limited resource, they step up and do their part.
(Michael’s report last year on municipal users in the Colorado River Basin is a useful summary of the situation around the west.)
