Spring doesn’t officially begin until next Tuesday, but with above-normal temperatures across New Mexico (the Albuquerque metro is expected to top out at 73 today, or 11 degrees above the average for this date) under sunny skies for the next couple of days, you’d think Spring had sprung.
But look for winter to make a last dash into New Mexico on Sunday and Monday before the storm system exits the state on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service’s area forecast discussion.
There’ll be record or near-record highs again on Friday, and another warm day is in store for Saturday, but expect winds to start picking up into the weekend, the weather service said.
Sunday and Monday will see a pickup in the winds, sharply cooler temperatures and the possibility of rain turning to snow over parts of the state.
In the Albuquerque metro area, it’ll be a breezy start on Saturday, with south winds between 20 and 25 mph, gusting as high as 30 mph, a partly sunny and windy day on Sunday dropping to a high of 64 and a 20 percent chance of showers Sunday night, the weather service said.
On Monday, the high will dip to the low 50s with a 30 percent chance of showers, diminishing to 10 percent on Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures gradually heading back into the 60s by mid-week.
