James Healy of Cibola and Sam Haywood of Volcano Vista were two of the three choices for Player of the Year in District 1-5A boys basketball for the 2011-12 season.
That duo shared the honor with Cleveland guard Kyle Quintana.
Forward Devon Vallejos and guards John Thompson and Marcus Tenorio also made 1-5A’s first team from Cibola.
Sophomore posts Kendall Johnson and Eric Lee joined Haywood on the first team from the Hawks.
Ray Rodriguez of Cibola and Greg Brown of Volcano Vista were the Co-Coaches of the Year in 1-5A.
Cibola’s Ross Buchman and Volcano Vista’s Matty Martinez were honorable mention.
♦ West Mesa and Valley each had two players on District 5-5A’s first team.
Guards Nick Trujillo and Jon Rael were chosen from the Mustangs. Forward Marcus Mora and guard Anthony Santillanes were named from the Vikings.
Jaylen Spraggins, a guard from Rio Grande, was also on the first team.
Guards Joe Anaya and Dominic Ramos were honorable mention from Valley, as were guards Jesus Oaxaca and Josh Platero from West Mesa, plus forward Mike Torrez and guard Elijah Trujillo from Rio Grande.
♦ Adrian Ortega of Atrisco Heritage Academy was named the District 5-4A boys Coach of the Year for leading the Jaguars to a share of the regular-season district crown with St. Pius.
St. Pius forward Nic Stafford is the 5-4A Player of the Year.
Joining him on the first team is teammate, guard Nick Ortiz. Atrisco guard Corbin Waquie was also voted to the first team.
AHA guard Phillip LaCour, Jags’ post Josh Lloyd and St. Pius guard Brandon Altamirano were named to the second team.
♦ From Bosque School, guard Andres Rivera and post Gabe Chavez both made the first team in District 3-2A. Wing Miles Horton and guard Justin Helman were honorable mention.
Girls All-District
Class 5A state champion Volcano Vista had the Coach of the Year in Lisa Villareal, and the Player of the Year in senior point guard Emma Fenske.
The Hawks had four other players on 1-5A’s first team — post Schylar Malone, guards Hannah Fenske and Laneah Bryan, and wing Jacklyn Alfaro.
Post Kassandra Harris and guard Alex De La O were on the first team from Cibola.
Ashley Williams of the Hawks and Kristen Weeker of the Cougars were honorable mentions.
♦ District 5-5A champion Valley had three players on that league’s first team — guard Jordan Gutierrez, forward Maya Apodaca and guard Marla Chavez. Rio Grande guards Jocelyn Gamboa and Ashley Gallegos were on the first team, as was West Mesa guard/forward Kamelya Medina.
Marina Tafoya and Salena Martinez from Valley, along with Monique Martinez and Ray Davison from West Mesa, and Angelica Trujillo and Vanessa Hernandez from Rio Grande, were honorable mention selections.
♦ In District 5-4A, forward Minnie Estrada of St. Pius and guard Annette Thomas-Daw from Atrisco Heritage were selected to the first team. Guards Carla Villareal and Natalie Zamora, and forward Lauren Houliston, all from the district champion Sartans, were on the second team. So was post Ameena Cartwright of AHA.
Post Sam White of Del Norte was the district’s Player of the Year, while Albuquerque Academy’s Taryn Bachis was Coach of the Year.
♦ Louise MacKenzie, a sophomore guard, was first-team in District 3-2A from Bosque School. Teammate Abby Anderson, a senior guard, was honorable mention.
