Hundreds Participate In N.M. Science Fair

For participants in the New Mexico Science and Engineering Fair, months or even years of work all boiled down to the weekend.

Close to 300 students from middle and high schools across the state went to Socorro for judging, said Tony Ortiz, a fair organizer. Medals were awarded Saturday.

In each category, the top three participants were awarded medals. The six grand award winners from the high school division — three from physical sciences and three from life sciences — will travel to Pittsburgh for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

There were also two grand award winners from the middle school division.

Several competitors have multi-year projects, Ortiz said, though they are only judged on the merits of the work they have done in the past year. Many others started their projects as early as summer of 2011.

The science and engineering fair isn’t just about doing a project with a snazzy presentation, Ortiz said. It’s about learning to make decisions based on research and to interpret results, which are useful skills in any area of life.

“It keeps our young people engaged,” he said. “It’s very important. We need to keep our kids involved in science education.”
