Police say the officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon came on the heels of an ongoing drug dispute, and the man shot by an officer had pointed an assault rifle at police.
Chief Ray Schultz briefed reporters shortly before 4 p.m. He did not release the name of the man who was shot but did say he has spent time in prison for drug offenses and aggravated battery on a police officer charges and was released from county jail just three days ago.
The veteran officer who shot him is a member of the APD Repeat Offender Project team, which often works undercover. Schultz did not identify the officer but said he has not been involved in any previous shootings.
The officer shot the man three times in the stomach, Schultz said. He was in surgery as of 4 p.m.
An APD officer shot a man in southeast Albuquerque this afternoon, police officials said.
The shooting occurred on Española St. near Zuni Rd., and the man has been taken to the hospital. His condition was unknown.
This is the fourth shooting involving an APD officer this year. Albuquerque police have shot 24 people since 2010, 17 of them fatally.
Families and community activists have called for a federal investigation into the department over the shootings.
