Mayor Richard Berry said his administration has good news as Albuquerqueans prepare to celebrate Earth Day: Energy-efficiency projects now save the city about $1.4 million a year.
He announced that estimate and others Friday afternoon at the city’s Biological Park, which will host an Earth Day celebration today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be giveaways and other activities at the zoo, aquarium, botanic garden and Tingley Beach.
The installation of solar panels and other energy projects have helped the city save nearly $1.4 million in annual energy costs and reduce its carbon footprint by more than 5,000 metric tons, Berry said. He said that’s equivalent to removing 1,000 cars from the streets.
“It’s good for the environment, but it’s also good for us as taxpayers,” he said.
The city launched a website about its efforts at cabq.gov/municipaldev/renewable-energy.
City Hall will also turn its lights off at 8:30 p.m. Sunday to celebrate Earth Day.
