UNM Holding Marathon ‘Bless Me, Ultima’ Reading

Rudolfo Anaya (Journal File)

The University of New Mexico is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic Mexican-American novel, “Bless Me, Ultima,” with a reading marathon.

The Daily Lobo reports that the novel’s author Rudolfo Anaya, along with 48 staff, students and professors, will read from Bless Me, Ultima, at the Zimmerman Library on Monday.

Anaya is scheduled to read the final page of the book around 5 p.m.

Focusing on a boy’s coming of age in New Mexico in the 1940s, the novel is credited with starting a new literary movement in Mexican-American literature and later helped sparked the careers of writers like Sandra Cisneros and Tony Diaz.

The reading is sponsored by the UNM English department and University Libraries, and will feature original papers from the author on display.
