The Santa Fe Ethics and Campaign Review Board won’t take action on an illegal campaign flier, distributed during the March municipal election, criticizing City Councilor Chris Rivera.
Board members said Tuesday no group or individual has claimed ownership of the flier and the city doesn’t have any other leads.
The flier tried to connect Rivera, via City Councilor Carmichael Dominguez, who supported Rivera during the election, to Anthony and Marlene Montoya, owners of troubled paving company Advantage Asphalt and Seal Coating. The Montoyas and Advantage Asphalt have been charged by the District Attorney’s Office with conspiracy, racketeering, fraud and bribery in connection with work done for Santa Fe County.
Marlene Montoya was Dominguez’s treasurer during his 2010 City Council re-election campaign.
A group called “Citizens to end corruption” is listed as the distributor on some of the fliers, though no such organization registered with the city during the election.
Voters overwhelmingly elected Rivera, a retired city Fire Chief, to represent the city’s District 3.
“I’m not sure much information will come out of this,” Rivera said Tuesday. “What I would like to see is that the public be aware this is not acceptable and if this is behavior they witness they can call somebody.”
