Former Sen. Pete Domenici Celebrates 80th Birthday

Pete Domenici, who served New Mexico in the U.S. Senate for 36 years before announcing his retirement in 2007, is celebrating his 80th birthday today.

The New Mexico Republican announced that he had a degenerative brain disease before he retired, but he’s stayed busy since leaving Capitol Hill and his health seems to be relatively good. Domenici is a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington and co-chaired a 2011 Debt Reduction Task Force that was widely praised as offering sensible – if politically difficult – solutions to the nation’s debt crisis.

The senator, who was a leading congressional advocate for increased use of nuclear power during his Senate career, is now serving as a co-chair of the center’s nuclear initiative.

I’m told Domenici and his colleagues at the Bipartisan Policy Center just celebrated the senator’s 80th year on the planet with cake and balloons at the center’s office in downtown D.C.
