Los Pinguos, a world-music band based in Los Angeles, will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at The Cooperage and at 12:30 p.m. May 18 at N4th Theater.
Guitarist Adrián Buono said it’s hard to describe the band’s music in a phrase.
“We play different rhythms. Some songs are rumbas in a flamenco style, some are reggae. There’s a little bit of salsa and tropicallike cumbia,” Buono said in a phone interview.
The band, originally from Buenos Aires, moved to LA about 10 years ago seeking wider exposure. It got what it sought.
After a number of years playing in Southern California and making records, it got noticed and began to tour internationally.
The band’s name in Spanish translates to “the penguins.” Buono said his nickname for band member Juan Manzur was “penguin” because he was from southern Argentina, though not at the southernmost part of the country where penguins live on the rocky coast. The band members decided to adopt the name for the ensemble.
The Cooperage is at 7220 Lomas NE. The N4th Theater is at 4904 Fourth NW.
Tickets for the Cooperage concert are $16 in advance and $19 day of show at www.ampconcerts.org, by calling 886-1251 or at Hold My Ticket, 112 Second SW or at the door. The N4th concert is free, but those attending must register at www.ampconcerts.org.
