Parenting is an art, not a science.
Yet opinions on that are plentiful, as we saw this week at the Sage website (abqjournalsage.com) following last week’s magazine, with its cover on “Raising the Perfect Child.”
Albuquerque reader Jan Harrington, who raised four sons in the 1970s, writes about chores, charity and boundaries in the way she raised her family.
While reader Michelle Burnett is more in the attachment parenting camp, favoring baby slings and breastfeeding.
Then there is Anne Lamott, whose new book, “Some Assembly Required: A Journal of My Son’s First Son” is about the art of letting go. For those of you who were handed “Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son’s First Year” upon becoming a parent, the new book is a poignant and spiritually astute redux, written with her son, Sam, who became a parent at age 19. A mellower, wiser but still neurotically funny Lamott joins her voice with that of the young man she raised.
How we wish they came with operating instructions! Lamott’s first book is the kind of book that gets handed from mom to mom, and I was one of those. So, go to abqjournalsage.com, and read my take on it. I’d love to hear yours, so please comment or send an email to sage@abqjournal.com.
Treats and prizes
Reader Lisa Godin of Albuquerque won “Marriage Rules: A Manual for the Married and Coupled Up” by Harriet Lerner, a giveaway from Ask the Experts blogger and marriage therapist John Thurman. Godin is a certified nutrition consultant, a married mother of three and enjoys being a soccer, volleyball and horse show mom. She told Sage she looks forward to reading “Marriage Rules” for ways to help keep her marriage fresh and growing.
Professional organizer Elizabeth Tawney Gross is giving away a Freedom Filer set to a drawing of the first 10 commenters on her Ask the Experts blog, which appears Saturdays. You, too, could solve your filing problem!
Our Community
Don’t forget to tune in to the Our Community slide shows, where this week you’ll see photos from the Corrales Art Studio Tour.
Oh, I might have buried the lead: Thurman asked me this week if readers might be interested in his take on “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the erotic novel that’s flying off the shelves in Albuquerque bookstores and libraries. I said yes, of course.
