Newsweek Profiles Gov. Susana Martinez

The vice presidential buzz surrounding New Mexico Go. Susana Martinez just got louder.

A Newsweek article that hits newsstands this week suggests Martinez is possibly Mitt Romney’s best choice for a running mate.

Here’s the opening sentence in Andrew Romano’s piece:

“Unless you happen to live near vast stretches of sand, sagebrush, and adobe, chances are you have no idea who Susana Martinez is. That’s a pity, because she may be the boldest, savviest vice presidential pick Mitt Romney could make.”

The Newsweek article paints Martinez as an up-and-coming star in the Republican Party, in part because she’s an Hispanic woman. Hispanics and women are two voter blocs that the GOP desperately needs help with in the run-up to the November election. The Newsweek piece also praises Martinez’s ability to connect with regular people, a quality that Romney has struggled to demonstrate.

Martinez, of course, has routinely said she would decline to accept and offer to be Romney’s running mate in part because she needs to help take care of her sister, Letitia, who has cerebral palsy.
