‘Elevated’ Target Store in Uptown Set To Open In March 2013, Create 200 Jobs

Target Corp. says its $20 million, 155,000-square-foot “elevated” store in Uptown in Albuquerque will open in March and create 200 new jobs. “Target is excited to open a new store in Albuquerque,” said Cary Strouse, Target’s senior vice president of stores in the Western region, in an email to the Journal. “New Mexico continues to be a great market for Target. We are committed to being a good neighbor and developing long-lasting relationships with guests and the Albuquerque community.”

The single-level store – above covered ground-level parking – will be the first Target store of its kind in New Mexico, providing typical Target everyday essentials and exclusive brands plus fresh produce, fresh packaged meat and pre-packaged baked goods. The store, at the corner of Louisiana and Indian School NE, will have elevators and escalators for customers and shopping carts to and from the parking lot to the store.

Site work on the property began last month.

Target will host job fairs about two months prior to the opening. Candidates may also apply online at Target.com/careers or at in-store kiosks located at all Target stores about three months prior to the new store opening.

Target said it believes in creating strong partnerships with local organizations in communities it serves. The new store expects to start a local grant program, contribute to the United Way and donate food to a Feeding America member, or approved agency.

The parent company on Wednesday reported a 1.2 percent increase in first-quarter profit and raised its earnings forecast for the full year due to strong sales of its food and fashions.

The Minneapolis-based retailer earned $697 million, or $1.04 per share, in the quarter ended April 28. That compares with $689 million, or 99 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 5.9 percent to $16.86 billion. Results beat the earnings of $1.02 per share on revenue of $16.83 billion analysts polled by FactSet were expecting.
