Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sam White said there will be an increased police presence on the road to the crest on Sunday and it will be closed if there are too many visitors headed to the mountain top to watch the eclipse.
The National Weather Service said skies in the Albuquerque area will be mostly clear, but if you’re viewing from the Mt. Taylor area, expect partly cloudy skies on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 80s.
4:23 p.m., May 18 — The US Forest Service is discouraging eclipse watchers from heading to Sandia Crest to watch Sunday’s solar eclipse, saying there is far too little parking at the top of the mountain to handle a crowd. The Forest Service lacks the legal authority to close the road to the crest, said District Range Cid Morgan, but the agency will be working with local law enforcement, which could take action to close the road if too many people try to squeeze up the narrow mountain road.
The crest area has about 175 parking places, Morgan said.
