UPDATED: Rio Rancho Crash Injures Five

The N.M. 528 and Southern Boulevard intersection was closed for about five hours late Monday after a serious motor vehicle crash happened there, according to a news release issued by the Rio Rancho Police Department.

Based on the initial investigations, about 9:15 p.m. traffic was traveling north on N.M. 528 and had the green light when a late-model gold Toyota Tundra pickup truck traveling east on Southern at a high rate of speed ran the red light and entered the intersection, the news release states.

The truck hit the front driver’s side of a gray late-model Dodge Neon, causing it to spin into a third vehicle, a late-model Nissan Titan.

As the Neon spun, it appears the driver was ejected, the news release says.

The three occupants of the Neon were taken to University of New Mexico Hospital.

The driver sustained very serious injuries and, as of Tuesday morning, was listed in critical condition.

The two other  Neon occupants had non-life threatening injuries.

The drivers of the Nissan and Toyota trucks were also taken to UNMH with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.

5:34 p.m. — A three-vehicle collision at N.M. 528 and Southern Boulevard shortly after 9 p.m. Monday sent five people to the hospital, including one in critical condition, and shut down the intersection for hours, KOAT-TV is reporting.

According to KOB-TV, the accident happened when a driver in a Toyota Tacoma blew through a red light at the intersection and hit a Dodge Neon.

The Neon then hit another truck, and the Neon’s driver was ejected, police told KOB-TV.
