ABQ Passes Restrictions on Fireworks

Albuquerque city councilors approved an ordinance tonight prohibiting the sale and use of some fireworks.

The regulations ban aerial spinners, missile-type rockets, roman candles, chasers, firecrackers and similar devices within Albuquerque city limits. Fireworks not covered by the ban could be used only on paved or barren lands with a water source nearby.

Fireworks of any kind would be prohibited in the bosque and official “Open Space” areas.

Violating the ordinance could result in a fine of up $500 and up to 90 days in jail.

The city cited the possibility of fire and injury as reasons for the ordinance.
