Manhole Cover Thefts Plague Las Cruces

Las Cruces Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the identity of the person or persons responsible for stealing thousands of dollars worth of manhole and water valve covers over the past several months, Crime Stoppers said in a news release.

Police said 23 manhole covers have been stolen from streets on Las Cruces’ East Mesa in the past five months, creating a serious safety risk to motorists and pedestrians, according to the release. Each manhole cover is valued at $110.

And just within the past week, 43 water valve covers were stolen from the vicinity of Northrise Drive and Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, with each cover reportedly worth $15, the release said.

Anyone with information that may help investigators is asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or text message a tip to LCTIPS (528477).
