California-based indie rock band Goldenboy has put the finishing touches on its new album, “The New Familiar.” But fans will have to wait until the album is released in October.
Shon Sullivan can’t control himself. The lead singer of indie rock band Goldenboy is gearing up for a new album and tour, and he’s just over the moon about it.
“It’s just exciting right now,” Sullivan says during a recent phone interview from his California home. “We’re finishing up a record at my place and it’s all been coming together quickly. It’s all just flowing right now, and I’m really proud that we’re all working well together.”
Goldenboy formed in 2000 in Diamond Bar, Calif., and has released four albums, with its latest being 2011′s “Sleepwalker.” The band’s first album, “Blue Swan Orchestra,” featured backing vocals by Elliott Smith.
The band’s current lineup consists of Sullivan, Bryan Bos, Katy Stone and Nicole “Coltrane” Verhamme. Sullivan says the new album is called “The New Familiar” and will be released in October.
“The album is quite different from the last album because we are going for more of a live sound,” he explains. “We wanted to capture the atmosphere of our live show because so many of our fans say they love our live set. It’s something different for us and we don’t have to be as polished as usual.”
Although the album is finished, Sullivan says the band will play the waiting game until its October release.
“This is the most difficult thing about the industry,” he says. “The album is going to be finished now, but fans will have to wait another three or four months in order for it to be out.”
With that in mind, Sullivan says he’s going to be very careful with finding the right balance of songs during the band’s live set.

“It’s got to be representative of the band’s journey,” he explains. “Yes, we will have some new tracks in there, but we’ve also got some songs that fans want to hear. It’s a balance, and I think the list right now is full of songs that represent the band’s past, present and future.”
