Low Turnout for Santa Fe CPR Event

A recent community-wide effort to teach Santa Feans CPR appears to have been less than successful, at least in terms of sheer numbers.

Santa Fe Fire Chief Barbara Salas said this week about 133 people participated locally in last month’s Project Heart Start, a one-day CPR education initiative sponsored by the New Mexico Heart Institute, KOAT-TV and, in Santa Fe, Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center and the city Fire Department.

Santa Fe organizers had hoped to reach 1,000 people, Salas told the city’s Public Safety Committee. Instead, around 100 people came to the classes and 33 people helped out as volunteers.

Salas didn’t offer any ideas on why the turnout was so low.

“We’re hoping next time we have better success with that,” she said.
