ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Federal authorities say a female golden eagle has been found dead near Dulce.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials say the bird was shot and the case is under investigation.

The birds are protected under the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

Authorities say violators of the act can face a $100,000 fine and/or a jail term.

KOB-TV says authorities are offering a $2,500 award for information leading to an arrest in the case.

The last golden eagle found killed in New Mexico was an adult male with a satellite tracker. That bird also was shot and was found west of Las Cruces in late February.
