Landfill Burns Near Colo.-N.M. Border

Firefighters battled a landfill fire Tuesday evening near Bondad, Colo., about 15 miles south of Durango and 4 miles north of the New Mexico state line, The Durango Herald reported.

“It’s putting up a lot of smoke,” Dave Imming of the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority told The Herald, estimating that half the landfill was burning.

The blaze was reported around 6 p.m. on the east side of U.S. 550, the paper reported.

It started during a lightning storm, but the official cause of the fire remained under investigation, according to The Herald.

Landfill fires can release potential toxins and take weeks to extinguish, Imming told the paper.

“This could burn for a long time,” Imming said.
