Nibbles: Pro’s Ranch Markets

This supermarket has a large selection of food that you stand in line to order. You can either eat at one of the picnic tables nearby or have it to go.

I ordered one of the many two-item choices that comprise a combination plate ($6.29). One item that I picked was the ground beef with small squares of potatoes and slices of red and green chile. The server called it picadillo. The other was the nopal. It’s a vegetable from the inside of the young prickly pear cactus; the spines had been removed.

The plate came with huge helpings of Spanish rice, refried beans, a slice of tomato, shredded lettuce and three corn tortillas.

LOCATION: 4201 W. Central, 833-1765
HOURS: 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily

The meal was very tasty except for the nopal, which was bland. And it was so plentiful that I was able to eat only half of it at a picnic table. I took the rest home, refrigerated it and had it the next day for lunch.

I drank a bottle of mango-flavored Mexican soda ($1.69).
