Dustin Dean, 35, of Grants was sentenced in federal court in Albuquerque Monday to 15 years in prison for being an armed career criminal in possession of firearms, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in news release.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth Gonzales said Dean represents the type of person a federal anti-violence initiative has targeted as “the worst of the worst” offenders for prosecution under federal firearms and narcotics laws, the release said.
Court records show that Dean was initially charged in a May 2011 criminal complaint, then in a July 24, 2011, federal indictment with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.
According to the indictment, Dean was found to have illegally possessed firearms and ammunition in Cibola County on May 3, 2011.
He was prohibited from having firearms and ammunition because of previous felony convictions, including for aggravated battery, residential burglary and attempted armed robbery in New Mexico’s 13th Judicial District and for false imprisonment and breaking and entering in the 2nd Judicial District, federal prosecutors said.
Dean also had a previous conviction in federal court for being a felon in possession of firearms, according to the release.
He pleaded guilty to the indictment in April.
Dean will be on supervised release for three years after completing his prison sentence.
