Schools must register by Oct. 15 if they want their second- through eighth-grade students to be eligible for the 2013 county, state and national spelling bees.
Registration is through the Scripps National Spelling Bee at www.spellingbee.com. The fee is $115, payable by checks and credit cards. Purchase orders will not be accepted.
Each school should have its own spelling contest, with winners going to the county bee. The Albuquerque and Rio Rancho school districts are considered to be county bees, as are these groups: Albuquerque charter schools: Albuquerque home schools, and Albuquerque private and parochial schools.
The New Mexico Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Journal and Newspapers in Education, is scheduled at 9 a.m. March 23 at Sandia Preparatory School in Albuquerque.
Study materials, suggestions on how to conduct spelling bees and information on the state bee are available on the national website when schools register. The Newspapers in Education website also has information and features Word a Day at www.abqnie.com. For more information, contact the state spelling bee coordinator Karen Kehe at kkehe@abqpubco.com or 505-823-3516.
