A convicted sex offender who entered the United States illegally was apprehended early Monday by Border Patrol agents operating out of Deming, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.
Agents assigned to the ATV unit at the U.S. Border Patrol Deming Station were patrolling N.M. 9 near mile marker 70 when they came across an undocumented immigrant about 5 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, the Sun-News said.
During processing, agents found that the man, later identified as Jais Lopez, had two active warrants out of California for failure to appear and that he had a previous arrest and conviction for unlawful sex with a minor in 2011, the paper reported.
Lopez also was found to have two prior immigration charges resulting in his deportation to his native Guatemala, according to the Sun-News.
He is currently being held in the Luna County Detention Center pending removal proceedings and charges for violation of a prior removal order, the paper reported.
