Chihuahua state officials have announced a bullfight in the Plaza Alberto Balderas in downtown Juarez, with the “fiesta brava” beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday, the El Paso Times reported.
Bullfighters Hector de Granada, Fermin Rivera and Gerardo Adame will be pitted against bulls from Jose Julian Liaguno’s livestock, according to the Times.
Juan Carlos Lopez, manager of Espectaculos Taurinos de Mexico and one of the organizers of Sunday’s event, said the event is proof that Juarez is recovering from a wave of violence that has plagued the city since 2008, the paper reported.
After several years without the one-time top tourist draw in Juarez, bullfights returned to the 107-year-old Plaza Alberto Balderas, the city’s oldest bullring, last year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Juarez, according to an earlier El Paso Times report.
A series of four corridas were scheduled at the Plaza Balderas this year, beginning on Easter Sunday, another in May and two are planned for September.
Juarez’s most famous bullring, the Plaza Monumental, was torn down in 2006 and was replaced on its site with a Walmart.
