An organization that wants to reform sex offender laws is holding its national conference in Albuquerque starting Thursday, and the city has gotten worried e-mails from citizens concerned about about their kids’ safety, said Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry.
So the city is hosting a town hall meeting tonight from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Eldorado High School’s Performing Arts Center to address what the city will do to beef up security around the conference, which will take place at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center at 10300 Hotel Ave. NE.
The conference, known as the Reform Sex Offender Laws Conference, aims at addressing what members say is an unjust and ineffective system for preventing sexual abuse. Organizers said some registered sex offenders may attend, but the conference will include attorneys, community organizers and not only those convicted of sex crimes.
The city attorney sent letters to the Ramada’s owner, warning him of a possible influx of sex offenders, and it sent a response to the RSOL organization’s Texas-based attorney, who accused the city of stifling the conference’s attendance and generating bad publicity.
