SANTA FE (AP) — The popular Santa Fe Children’s Museum may be forced to close by the end of the year because of a budget crunch.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports the museum needs to raise $200,000 by the end of the year or it will close either temporarily or for good.
The museum has served about 80,000 visitors annually and hosted countless school field trips in the past 27 years. Activities for children include making big soap bubbles, learning how to concoct compost and face-painting.
Museum director of marketing Julie DeFeo says the economic downturn had been tough for the museum and private unrestricted donations are down 60 percent this year. Revenue from admissions, rentals and gift shop sales isn’t enough to cover operating costs.
