A windy start to balloon fiesta?

There’s a bit more clarity this afternoon (Tues. 10/2/12) to the computer weather forecast models, as a cold front appears headed toward New Mexico from the east right about the same time the Balloon Fiesta is scheduled to start:


When last we discussed the issue, there was some uncertainty about when the front would arrive, but that’s become much more clear in the last 24 hours, according to Kerry Jones at the National Weather Service. That means we should expert a shallow air mass out on the eastern plains pushing in on Albuquerque, creating our notorious “gap winds” – winds that blow through the mountain gaps, like Tijeras Canyon.

But remember, as I explained yesterday, that east winds in the canyon (and therefore at the Weather Service and across the southern part of Albuquerque) don’t necessarily mean east winds at the Fiesta field:
