Monsoon watch: Albuquerque wrapup

With the monsoon season now “officially” over, Jennifer Palucki at the National Weather Service has done a neat wrapup looking at 2012 for the Albuquerque metro area compared to previous years (Jennifer scores the “official” monsoon season as rain from June 15 to the end of September). Albuquerque’s a good place to do this because we have an incredibly dense network of rain gauges, so you can really see how spotty the monsoon rain pattern is.

The Albuquerque Foothills in 2011 received just over 7 inches of precipitation for the period, which is near normal for the location. This year, the foothills only recorded 2.51 inches of precipitation, or approximately 35 percent of normal. The Albuquerque Valley even received more rainfall, at just over 4 inches. The Albuquerque Valley received approximately 1.5 inches more precipitation this year than in 2011.

She’s got some nice maps, too. I recommend a click.
