SANTA FE — A southbound Rail Runner Express train struck and killed a woman pedestrian Tuesday night south of Santa Fe, about six miles north of Kewa pueblo.
Rail Runner spokeswoman Augusta Meyers said the woman was walking along the tracks and then apparently “decided to hop over” the tracks just ahead of the train about 6:30 p.m.
Meyers said the woman appeared to be Native American but her identification was not available Tuesday night.
The incident stalled trains from both directions while the incident was investigated. Passengers on later trains were bused around the scene, between the Kewa and N.M. 599 Rail Runner stops. Passengers on the train that hit the pedestrian remained on board. Meyers said about 8 p.m. that the train was expected to move out soon.
