Delay in Kirtland Fuel Spill Data

There will be a three week delay in getting the latest data from the network of wells monitoring for jet fuel in groundwater in and near Kirtland Air Force Base. The Air Force provides the information in a massive data dump quarterly to the New Mexico Environment Department, the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority and other interested parties (including the Journal – the Air Force very kindly burns one or more CD’s for me with all the data).

NMED last Friday granted the Air Force a three week extension, with the new data now due Oct. 19. The correspondence between the Air Force and NMED on the issue blames “laboratory delays and delays caused by a server upgrade.” (pdf of NMED letter)

For background, my most recent story on the historic jet fuel spill and efforts to clean it up is here.
