I usually go to Federico’s for lunch on Tuesdays when it has its 99-cent taco special. Don’t let the price put you off. For me, this is what tacos are all about. Chicken is my favorite; the crispy shells are filled with chunks of perfectly cooked pollo, topped with cheese and fresh lettuce. But that doesn’t stop me some days from having the Chile Relleno Burrito ($4.49), a hot, satisfying mixture of beans, with two succulent, fresh, egg-battered rellenos, topped with guacamole, wrapped in a flour tortilla. One bite and the cheese oozes, and the flavors are perfect. The salsa bar has different styles of red and green along with jalapenos and pickled carrots.
Federico’s is part of three other locations in Albuquerque. Fast food has a bad name, but its dream was to offer wholesome, great Mexican food at a reasonable price. The signature dish is the carne asada plate ($8.49). The unadorned dining room is clean, the help is friendly, and the menu is extensive. Of course it has menudo ($6.99) on weekends.
It serves breakfast all day, and the Mexican juices are freshly made.
