A bao is a Taiwanese roll about the size of somebody’s fist, stuffed with anything the baker thinks of, sweet or savory. This fairly new place in Nob Hill where Ecco Gelato used to be offers a fine selection of baos both sweet and savory, and similar dishes of the same size and nature – dainty cinnamon rolls, and a single hot dog wrapped in bread the way you used to cook them over a campfire as a child, all for $2 each.
I had a chicken-stuffed bao with coffee for my savory and a chocolate chip cookie just slightly larger than the ones my mother used to make for my sweet. The warm chicken bao smelled delicious the minute I opened it, and tasted as good as it smelled. The cookie was mouth-melting rich.
This is not a place to advertise Huge! Portions! unless you want several rolls instead of a supersized sandwich. It is a place where you can have as much or as little as you want, and relax while doing so. Everything is made from fresh, local ingredients except, perhaps, the tropical fruits that flavor some of the sweet rolls.
