Everybody’s refreshed after a breather

The folk-rock quintet Dark Dark Dark took a hiatus in late 2011 from music and returned refreshed and full of energy for its current album, “Who Needs Who.”

Sometimes, you just need a break. Just ask Nona Marie Invie and her band Dark Dark Dark.

The folk rock quintet, which has been making music since 2006, took a five-month hiatus in late 2011. The break saved the band and inspired the music behind its newest album, “Who Needs Who.”

“It (the hiatus) was great and it felt really wonderful,” Invie says during a recent interview. “It was months of not having to do anything regarding Dark Dark Dark. We all went out and pursued our own interests, and that helped us come back refreshed.”

Invie says the band, which includes Marshall LaCount, Walt McClements, Mark Trecka and Adam Wozniak, got back together in March and started writing.

“I think it created a new perspective for me,” she explains. “Because we are around each other all the time on tour, it’s easy to lose sight of how amazing things really are. The break helped reinforce my appreciation for what we have.”

When it came to writing, Invie says the band came together with forward-thinking attitudes. Each member wanted to move beyond what Dark Dark Dark had previously done, she says.

“We seemed to be on different pages at times,” she says. “But we all know what we are doing and wanted to create the best music that we could.”

Invie says most of the writing took place in the studio. She says her writing often takes place when she is off tour.

“I don’t have a lot of time to sit at a piano and write when we’re on tour,” she says. “I do let the melodies and words go around but the song doesn’t come together until I’m able to get to a piano. Many of these songs are about understanding and accepting the nuances of my emotions. The obvious parts and the dark parts. There are times when it’s important to quit fantasizing and face the truth about what is happening.”

Since its last full-length, 2010′s “Wild Go,” the band has toured extensively in the United States and Europe, enjoyed sold-out shows, national radio appearances and support dates for bands like The National and Low.

The band also has had TV placements on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Parks and Recreation” and “American Idol.”

“We’re always looking for opportunities to showcase our music,” Invie says. “In getting our music on TV shows, that gives us exposure that we couldn’t ever imagine.”

Invie says she’s anticipating the tour and hopes that fans connect with the new material.

“We got introspective on this album and are feeling a little vulnerable,” she explains. “We’ve put a piece of ourselves out there on this record that has never been seen. It’s been an amazing start to this tour.”
