Quintessence set for two concerts

A 20-minute work containing the words of the baseball poem “Casey at the Bat” highlight this weekend’s paired concerts of Quintessence: Choral Artists of the Southwest.

Robert Kapilow’s work for chorus and 11-piece orchestra is titled “Play Ball!”

“The main themes that recur in the orchestra are ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ and the medieval ‘Dies Irae,’ the four-note theme that is used in many composers’ requiems. It’s a universal signature of foreboding or fear,” said Matthew Greer, the artistic director of the Albuquerque-based vocal ensemble.

Other highlights are Scott Wilkinson’s “Four Whatevers,” a clever setting of four aphorisms, such as “A Stitch in Time Saves Nine,” and a set called “Doo-Wop Madrigals,” reimagined by Gregg Smith.

The concerts are at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle SE, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona NE.

Tickets are $15 general public, $10 seniors and $5 students at the door.
