Watching for Albuquerque’s First Freeze

Four years ago, Albuquerque recorded its first freezing temperature at the official Weather Service airport station on Oct. 23. This year, not so much.

The overnight low this morning (Tues., Oct. 23) hit 49 at the airport. But what’s “normal”? The average first freeze at the airport, according to the Weather Service, is Oct. 31. But one of the problems with thinking about Albuquerque’s “normal” weather is that it’s no one thing, varying significantly from the Valley to the foothills:

The current forecast calls for cooling temperatures this weekend, with lows down into the mid 30s. Nothing so far to indicate a freeze on the way.
