Lionsgate’s Grindstone Entertainment has closed a deal to acquire the North American rights to the New Mexico film, “Blaze You Out.”
The film is the directorial debut from Mateo Frazier and Diego Joaquín López.
“Blaze You Out” tells the story of Lupe, played by Veronica Diaz-Carranza, who is an aspiring DJ, and her sister Alicia, played by Melissa Cordero, who are struggling to make a living in the fictional Esperanza Valley, which is a community suffocated by generations of heroin use.
Ever since the death of their parents, Lupe has looked out for her rebellious sister and kept her on track.
But when Alicia suddenly disappears, Lupe is forced into the heart of the town’s dark underworld. She quickly discovers that in order to survive — and save the person who matters most — she must not only harness the power that exists within her, but also that surrounds her.
López has said he and Frazier wanted to tell the story, but also make sure that the women in the movie were strong characters.
“Women are holding together the world right now,” López said in an earlier interview. “There is so much strength that women have, that we needed to tell this story. It’s a dark story, but very empowering.”
When Frazier and López began to write the script, the duo worked — many times tirelessly — on a compelling story that would open people’s mind.
“Drug problems exist, and they have been around for generations,” Frazier says. “What we were trying to do is intertwine the two worlds and show how they coexist. A lot of times, we don’t get to see the reality of the darker world. Our movie balances the two, especially when Lupe goes searching for her sister. It’s like you are leaving your comfort zone.”
The film is produced by former Disney exec Alicia Keyes Touche out of AJK Films. The cast also features Elizabeth Pena, Mark Adair Rios, Jeremy Ray Valdez, Q’orianka Kilcher and Raoul Trujillo. It was also filmed in Espanola.
