Earlier this week, I wrote about a 10-year-old boy who was Tased at a career fair in Tularosa, by a state motor transportation officer. It was kind of a crazy story. Everyone admits the boy was Tased, and a civil lawsuit brought by the boy’s family says the officer did it on purpose after the boy made a joke. In internal statements, the officer said his Taser went off by accident when he was showing it to students.
Fair enough. But after I wrote the story it was picked up by, among others, The Smoking Gun and Yahoo! news. So here’s the problem: the Yahoo! story (now fixed) said an Albuquerque police officer had done the Tasing, and showed an image of an APD badge. I’m told APD received angry calls from folks in the community and from around the country.
So, if you read the incorrect Yahoo! article, know that a) it was wrong, b) it’s fixed now, and c) APD had nothing to do with the Tasing. Mistakes happen, but let’s stop with the angry calls to APD.
