Las Cruces Mulls Where to Put Giant Roadrunner Statue

LAS CRUCES — City officials in Las Cruces are considering where to relocate the city’s giant statue of a roadrunner.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the 20-foot-tall, 40-foot-long statue is currently in the backyard of its creator, artist Olin Calk.

The statue was completed in 1993 as part of a recycling education program and was stationed that year at what was then the Las Cruces Foothills Landfill as a way to encourage creative recycling projects.

It moved in 2001 to a rest area just west of Las Cruces off I-10 where it became a familiar landmark to thousands of travelers.

The city has paid $26,000 to remove and reconstruct the statue.

City officials are considering several sites, including the rest stop, to relocate the statute.
