UPDATE: Mayor Announces JetBlue Coming in Spring in ‘State of the City’ Speech

(Roberto E. Rosales/ Journal)

2:02 p.m. —  Mayor Richard Berry announced Wednesday that JetBlue will start providing nonstop service between Albuquerque and New York this spring as part of a new incentive package launched to bolster business at the airport.

The announcement was part of his “State of the City” speech, which he delivered at a luncheon sponsored by Albuquerque Economic Development Inc., a nonprofit group.

The mayor also said the city has received a $5 million “claw back” payment from Schott Solar because the company didn’t meet the terms of its agreements with the city. Berry will propose the City Council create a new fund with the money to pay for marketing, job training and similar economic-development activities.

As for public safety, Berry also announced that the city will restart its recruitment incentives for Albuquerque police officers. Cadets will receive $5,000 when they complete the police academy, and city employees will get a $500 bonus if they refer someone who ends up joining the police force.

Berry also recounted the various accomplishments he’s most proud of and offered some comments about the future.

After the speech, Berry answered questions from reporters — some of which centered on the recent police union survey about morale in the department.

Berry said he believes APD is “one of the finest departments in the country.”

The survey said officers disapprove of the mayor’s job performance related to APD. Berry said: “It’s neither my goal nor my job to win a popularity contest with the union.”

Mayor Richard Berry will make his annual “State of the City” address at noon today in the Marriott Pyramid.

The address usually includes some new announcements, a recap of accomplishments and a look to the future.

The mayor’s office says it will stream the speech live on cabq.gov and that people are encouraged to tweet under the hashtag #BerryABQ.

I will be tweeting from my account, @mckaydan. You don’t have to have a twitter account to see my page.
