APD Cop On Leave After Allegedly Encouraging Fight

An Albuquerque cop has been placed on administrative leave after a man said the officer encouraged him and another man to fight each other in order to settle an ongoing dispute.

Police spokeswoman Tasia Martinez said Monday that officers were dispatched to 4805 Marquette NE on Sunday to investigate a battery that occurred during an altercation.

The unidentified man told investigators that when Officer Gregory Donofrio responded to his call regarding an altercation he had with his neighbor earlier that day, the officer encouraged them to fight it out.

Afterward, Martinez said, the injured man drove himself to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Officer Donofrio, who has been with APD since January 2006, was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation, Martinez said.
