Historian to speak at NHCC event

Historian Thomas E. Chávez reads from his latest book “A Moment in Time: The Odyssey of New Mexico’s Segesser Hide Paintings” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 in the Salón Ortega at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 Fourth SW. The event is free and open to the public.

The book is an anthology of the thoughts and conclusions of scholars on the two paintings that were created in New Mexico in the first half of the 18th century. They were shipped to Switzerland by a Jesuit missionary and rediscovered after World War II by a Swiss ethno-historian.

The Segesser Hides are on permanent display at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe.

Chávez was director of the Palace of the Governors and later served as executive director of the NHCC. He has also published nine books and numerous articles on history.
