West Siders Get State Honors

The All-State soccer teams for the 2012 season have been released.

Boys Class 5A

Volcano Vista sophomore defender Parker Conaway was named to 5A’s first team.

Two Hawks, senior midfielder Justin Cuadra and sophomore forward Teriq Canales, were on the second team.

A handful of West Side athletes were honorable mention in 5A. From Cibola, senior goalkeeper Sixto Lopez, senior defender Caleb Glines, freshman defender Joe Ortiz, senior forward Zach Atkerson and senior forward Matthew Smith were named.

Volcano Vista had honorable mentions with senior goalkeeper Nic Jetter, sophomore defender Josh Cooper, sophomore midfielder C.J. Slough, senior forward Charlie Harmon and sophomore forward Alec Cravens.

Girls Class 5A

Volcano Vista, the state runner-up, had three players on 5A’s first squad — senior midfielder Ruth Bruciaga, junior defender Hannah Fenske and junior forward Claire Lynch.

Cibola had two players on the second team in junior defenders Lindsey Nials and Jordan Morris. Volcano Vista senior forward Hope Cruz and Hawks’ sophomore midfielder Caity Acosta were also on the second team.

Both the Cougars and Hawks had multiple honorable mention selections.

From Cibola: senior goalkeeper Hannah Waufle, junior defenders Monica Gebler and Susan Griffo, junior midfielder Lindsey Evans, sophomore forward Renee Brinson, junior forward Apsen Carpentier and senior forward Courtnee Urrea.

From Volcano Vista: senior goalkeeper Jovana Canales, junior defender Shelby Thomas and freshman defender Sarah Lucero.

Boys Class 4A

St. Pius did not have a player on the first team. Junior forward David Gros was named to the second team.

Senior defender Brian Billstrand, junior defender Alex Arvizo, senior defender William Sedas, and senior midfielders Alfredo Candia and Erick Hernandez were honorable mention.

Girls Class 4A

St. Pius had two girls chosen to the All-State first team — senior midfielders Adrianna Naranjo and Gabrielle Campbell.

Macie Clemens, a junior defender, was on the second team. Junior defender Darion Faulkner, sophomore defender Amanda Hernandez and junior forward Alexis Sanchez were honorable mention.

Boys Class 1A-3A

Bosque School put four players on the first team, led by senior forwards Felipe Galvis and Andres Rivera. They were joined by junior midfielder Kyle Frank and senior defender Evan Hicks.

Senior midfielder Greg Trost was voted to the second team. Senior goalkeeper Nathan Kamm was honorable mention.

Girls Class 1A-3A

Senior midfielder Annie Allison was Bosque’s only first-team choice. Junior forward Sarah Moulton was on the second team.

Junior goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie was honorable mention, along with sophomore defender Laura Trost and freshman defender Alex Cruz.

Bosque’s Robyn Serge was voted the Class 1A-3A Girls Coach of the Year.
