Actor has Einstein down to a science

Tom Schuch plays the famous scientist in his one-person play “Albert Einstein: A Stage Portrait.

Tom Schuch’s alter ego might be Albert Einstein. After all, the Albuquerque actor has been doing the one-man play “Einstein: A Stage Portrait” for 11 years all over North America.

The last time Schuch performed the play in his hometown was in 2005.

“The production is the same but the character is a lot richer. I have learned more about Einstein in terms of the voice, the physicalization – how Einstein walks, how he stands, the way he looks at people,” Schuch said. “I’ve gone more in depth into those details.”

He will reprise the role this weekend and next at the Musical Theatre Southwest’s Black Box Theatre. It’s a full-length, two-act play with an intermission.

For years, Schuch said, he’s read biographies of Einstein, listened to recordings of his speeches and watched videos of him. He also takes tips from audience members about his portrayal.

In that regard, Schuch recalled that when he had done the play at The Cell in 2001 there was a woman in the audience of one performance who had met Einstein.

“I didn’t meet her. She had to leave right after my show. But she told someone who stayed that they should tell the actor that he needs to put holes in the elbows of his sweater because that’s the way Einstein was,” Schuch said.

He did.

“I do a Q-and-A after every show. People want to know more about Einstein and the why and how of what I do. So I make it part of the evening,” he said.

He hopes to enlist the help of a physicist to discuss Einstein’s science. More than 100 years ago Einstein published his Theory of Special Relativity.

Schuch also has a shorter version of the play that he presents for schools.

Schuch is a founding member and board president of the Mother Road Theatre Company. He’s also appeared in some of its productions as well as in locally produced films and TV programs.
