Band mixes country originals and covers

Albuquerque country singer Bo Brown is readying a second album, which is slated for a 2013 release.

By day, Bo Brown is a stay-at-home dad.

At night, he can be found performing country music around town.

“It’s a balance and I think I’ve got it down,” he says. “I try to keep both aspects of my life separate. It’s tough but it’s working.”

Brown grew up as part of a musical family, and for years has been putting his spin on country music.

He leads the Bo Brown Band, which has a revolving lineup of players.

“I’ve played with a lot of these guys and I have different drummers and bassists coming in to fill the lineup,” he says. “At the beginning, it was difficult to get everybody on the same page. Because I’ve been doing this for so long, it’s become easier because all of the guys can play, and play well.”

Brown released his first album two years ago and is well into writing the second one. He expects it to be released sometime in 2013.

“I get into these moods when I write and I seclude myself from everything,” he explains. “That’s usually when everything flows out of me.”

Brown says while he’s working on new, original music, he’s keeping an option to put some covers on the album, as well.

“Like many musicians, I have to find the right balance between original music and cover songs,” he explains. “I’m lucky enough to perform every weekend, but that also means I have to put some cover songs in my lineup. I’m trying to gain more fans while pleasing the club owners. It’s what musicians have to do until they get enough of a fan base together.”

Brown also is toying with the idea of putting a handful of Spanish songs on the album.

“My dad used to perform in Spanish and I think everyone is expecting that from me,” he explains. “I think it would be really cool to add that element into my music.”

Brown says he performs 150-200 shows a year, and hopes to get a break.

He recently performed a concert at the Gildan New Mexico Bowl before the game and keeps busy by traveling across the country playing his music.

“I want to keep New Mexico on the map when it comes to music,” he says. “It’s always hard work, but worth it.”

He been putting his music on iTunes and has begun to see some of the royalties come in.

“I know that people are listening and discovering my music daily,” he says. “It’s humbling to see that the hard work is paying off. I’m excited that I’m still getting the opportunity to keep pushing forward with the music.”
