Cowboys danced in Las Vegas

The History Press has published “Cowboy Reunions of Las Vegas, New Mexico” by Pat Romero. For decades starting in 1915, Las Vegas, N.M., hosted a Cowboys’ Reunion, which became “legendary in Western lore,” according to the book’s back cover. Not only did it attract cowboys from over the West, but it also drew such names as actor Tom Mix, who filmed silent movie scenes in the area, and members of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. Dick Bills and his nephew, singer Glen Campbell, performed at the reunion’s balls. The book is based on the “Git Fer Vegas, Cowboy!” exhibit that Romero, also known as Edwina P. Romero, curated for the city of Las Vegas Museum and Rough Rider Memorial Collection.

BOOK ON THREE FAITHS: Mirabai Starr is the author of “God of Love, A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.”

In the introduction, Starr writes that the book “pays homage to the mystical and social justice teachings of the world’s three great monotheistic religions … we are looking for those practices that unify rather than divide us. In a world fractured by an ever-renewed demonization of ‘the other,’ and fueled by age-old misunderstandings between the Children of Abraham, it is my hope that this book will serve as a reminder of their mutual dedication to loving kindness as the highest expression of faith. …”

Starr has been an adjunct professor of philosophy and world religions at the University of New Mexico’s Taos campus since 1993.
