There’s still room for educators to sign up for a Jan. 4 workshop on ways to teach K-12 students about the Rio Grande ecosystem.
The Bosque Education Guide, which will be available at the workshop, is a curriculum that includes classroom and field activities for learning about the Middle Rio Grande Valley ecosystem. The curriculum is even aligned to state academic standards, which warms my wonky little heart.
The guide includes 700 pages of K-12 activities, Spanish materials are available, and topics include geology, fire science, natural history and human influence. The central activity for students is building a model of the ecosystem, then moving pieces of the model to simulate human influence. Later, the students “restore” the ecosystem.
The only cost for the workshop and curriculum is the $3 per vehicle to park at the Rio Grande Nature Center. The workshop will be held at the nature center on Jan. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wear appropriate outdoor-indoor clothes, and pack a lunch.
