Nibbles: Marino’s Pizza

I recently passed a new pizza place on Osuna called Marino’s advertising Jersey-style pizza. Being from New Jersey originally, I just had to stop in.

The décor is different from any pizza place I’ve ever been in. It’s Jersey Shore without Snookie – sand-colored walls topped with foamy ocean and blue sky.

This is South Jersey-style pizza – chewy crust, not thick, not thin, with good-quality toppings. I ordered a couple to try, one vegetarian with olives, peppers and mushrooms; and the second would be considered a meat-lover’s pie with pepperoni, sausage and Canadian bacon. Both had good flavor, a nice balance of toppings to crust. The sausage and pepperoni had a good bite, spicier than the chain pizzas.

Marino’s Pizza
LOCATION: 585 Osuna NE, 344-1150
HOURS: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 2-7 p.m. Sundays; closed Tuesdays

Everything tasted fresh, not greasy. The dough is made fresh every morning. The sauce, which can sometimes have a sweet taste, has no high-fructose corn syrup and the cheese is real, not imitation.

A basic 16-inch cheese pie is $10.95, and $1 for each additional topping. Marino’s also carries great flavored sodas from Virgil’s and Izze.
